Are you intimidated by face oils?

If you are, then I totally understand you.

There's this misconception about face oils being oily or leaving a greasy feeling or shine on your skin. This is a fear which people with combination/oily skin in particular have. It is a misconception as it all depends on choosing the right vegetable oils for your skin type and avoiding any mineral oils.

We use only 100% natural plant oils and no mineral oils. Mineral oil is a colourless and odourless oil that's made from petroleum—as a by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and very cheap.

Unlike mineral oils, plant oils are expensive, some much more than others, as they are extracted directly from the relevant parts of the plants such as the leaves, seeds, flowers, bark etc. The methods of extraction are also essential to result in the different kinds of plant oils: vegetable oils of fats, macerated oils and essential oils.

I have personally been using plant oils on my face for many years now, ever since I wanted to go more "green and simple" in my skincare ritual instead of splashing layers of serums and creams full of chemical ingredients. I have to say that my skin started to look so much healthier and glowing. Furthermore, my rashes are no longer present (unless I get a peak of stress) and I don't have these tiny under-the-skin painless pimples (if you ever have had them, you would know what I'm talking about).

This is also the reason why I had developed 3 facial oils in the o.Moi range :

  • Soothing Facial Oil - light, calming, protecting and a relaxing spa-at-home feeling for all skin types.
  • Balancing Facial Oil - quickly absorbing light oil, purifying to help reduce appearance of pimples and clear the skin for combination/ oil skin.
  • Q10+E Facial Oil - nourishing & rejuvenating oil, with a unique anti-oxidant blend of Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin E for dry skin or those wishing to delay the effects of passing time. (Our best-selling facial oil).

If you are already a lover of facial oils, are you getting the best of your facial oil?

This is some tips on how to best use them:

Use them before or after a water-based cream or lotion?

I personally use my facial oil as a serum, therefore before my moisturiser. This is usually in the morning when I want my moisturiser to act all day long as the facial oil will allow a slower diffusion of the moisturiser into the skin.

However, if you wish to use an emulsion with the facial oil, you can also apply the emulsion first and the facial oils afterwards.

At night time, the facial oil can be used on its own in place of a night cream. My night routine is usually done in several steps over the hours before bedtime. I usually apply only the facial oil straight after my shower since I don't have much time then with a toddler always pulling at my clothes. After having put my boy to bed and before my own bedtime, I then apply my moisturiser, which is the Plump It Up Face Cream at the moment as it is rich enough for my skin during this cold season.

Mix the face oil be mixed with a moisturiser.

This is our very idea behind the Mix & Match Concept, where you can add 2-3 drops of the facial oil in your moisturiser to increase the its potency. Mix well in the palm of your hand, cup over your nose and take a deep breath before massaging over the entire face and neck until complete absorption. I love doing this in the morning when I'm rushing to get ready.

Only a few drops are enough.

Since our facial oils are totally waterless formulations, they are therefore concentrated and don't require a lot to be effective on the skin. Use only 4-6 drops of the facial oil of your choice, warm in the palms of your hands, cup over your nose again for the holistic well-being and gently massage over the face and neck.

Add to primer or foundation.

If you have very dry skin or flaky skin, you can even add 1-2 drops of the facial oil to your primer or your foundation to have a dewy finish. I used to also tap a finger with a little of facial oil on the dry area of my face over the makeup to avoid the flakiness.

I hope that this blog post has been helpful and that maybe you would like to give a go to facial oils if you have never used any of them before. Feel free to comment below and share your experience with facial oils.

Thank you and wishing you a lovely day!
